SUSPENSION OF STANDARDIZED TESTING AND REPORTING (STAR) FOR 2013-2014
On October 2, 2013, Governor Brown signed Assembly Bill 484 which suspends certain portions of the state-wide Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) assessments for the current school year. This will provide school districts much needed time to prepare for new, computer-based assessments for the Common Standards.
In lieu of taking the Mathematics, Language Arts and Writing components of the STAR test this year, the state has directed school districts to provide students in grades 3-8 the opportunity to experience and practice taking the new computer-adaptive pilot assessment later this spring. Student results on these pilot tests will not be published. However, students in grades five and eight will still take the Science portion of STAR this school year and those results will be made available.
The new assessment system, the California Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress (CMAPP), will be fully administered and reported in the 2014-2015 school year.
The Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District has been preparing diligently for the arrival of the Common Core Standards and accompanying assessment program which is expected to focus on critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving. District and classroom-based assessments will not be affected by the suspension of STAR and will provide excellent measures of student progress and achievement for the current year.
Implementing new standards and an innovative, computer-based assessment program poses many challenges for school districts. In Dry Creek, administration, teachers and support staff will continue to work professionally and diligently to insure the success of every student during this implementation.
