Have you ever had a moment when a picture spoke to you?

Do you remember how it made you feel? The energy, excitement, the story it told without words?

That’s the feeling captured in a series of photos of Joshua, a young student exploring what would soon become his Transitional Kindergarten classroom in Dry Creek.

“This environment is different. He gets to walk in, and the first thing they are doing is a playful activity,” said his father, Kevin Kaley.

Joshua’s teacher, Mrs. Knebel, brings a deep passion to her work with Dry Creek’s youngest learners. She knows that play-based learning at Joshua's age opens the door to curiosity, confidence, and early academic success.

“I need them to feel successful from the moment they walk through the door,” she said. “You can see them see it, you can see them feel it, and that is a complete and total gift every day.”

To an outside visitor, her classroom might look like a room full of students playing. But Mrs. Knebel sees something far more intentional unfolding.

“Most of the time when folks walk into our classroom they would probably see us quote-on-quote playing,” she explained. “But really, playing at the TK level is academic opportunity and social-emotional interaction with other people.”

Whether they’re singing, reading out loud, or finding objects around the classroom, her TK students are quietly building a strong foundation for all the learning ahead.

“It’s a fantastic age where the world starts to really present itself to them,” Mrs. Knebel said. “I feel like it’s incredibly priceless."

Priceless for Joshua, whose journey is only beginning.

“It’s bigger than just his TK journey. This is just the beginning of it," Kaley said.

So when you see photos of Dry Creek students with bright eyes and big smiles, look beyond the surface.

Remember, each child is stepping into something greater, discovering who they are, what they can do, and how far they’ll go because of TK.
